The Vintage Carousel waits just beyond the fairground gates, where the crowd used to be thickest.
Cotton candy opens light and airy, like spun sugar catching on the cool night air. Crisp red apple follows, bright and just barely tart, with the familiar sweetness of caramel-dipped apples under the ticket-booth lights. Beneath it all, caramel, vanilla bean, sandalwood, and caramelized amber create a warm, golden glow that lingers long after the music fades.
Above you, the carousel turns.
Gilded horses rise and fall with no one riding them. Their painted saddles are worn smooth. Their glass eyes catch the moon each time they circle past. Somewhere nearby, a calliope plays a tune you almost recognize—but no one is standing at the keys.
