The Rain Seasons

The Rain Seasons is a four-part study in that wonderful aroma just after the rain.  Every season has its unique character.  This scent memoir begins low to the ground and climbs, season by season, toward the clouds. It starts where the rain lands: on dirt roads and hot pavement, on fallen leaves and on stone. It ends somewhere colder, cleaner, and far above sea level, where the rain has turned to something rarer and the air smells like mountains.

Spring Rain opens the collection close to the earth — a wet pebble road outside a village in the north of England, green and mineral and real. Summer Rain follows with the electric charge of a storm breaking over a city street, asphalt steaming. Autumn Rain slows everything down into a quiet afternoon walk through Central Park, wet leaves underfoot and a wisp of lavender in the air. Winter Rain arrives last and highest, the thin, perfumed air of the Alps — the kind you breathe in on a terrace in St. Moritz.
