Useful candle care and safety tips
Candle Care
Before you light
- Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before every burn for a clean, steady flame.
- “Mushrooms” (little bulb-like tops) on the wick are normal, especially with richly scented candles, but they should be trimmed off before the next burn to reduce soot and keep the flame safe.
- Make sure the wax is free of matches, wick trimmings, or other debris.
While Burning
- Always burn within sight and keep away from children, pets, drafts, and anything that can catch fire.
- Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from flammable materials and keep it upright while burning.
- Soy wax has a “memory” so let the melt pool reach the edges of the container on the first burn (usually 2–3 hours) to help prevent tunneling and losing hours of enjoyment.
- Do not burn longer than 3–4 hours at a time; if the flame grows too high, extinguish, let cool, trim the wick, and relight.
Putting it Out
- Extinguish carefully—use a snuffer, wick dipper, or gently blow out the flame; never use water.
- Allow the candle to cool and the wax to fully harden before moving it or trimming the wick again.
When to Stop
- Discontinue use when about 1/4 inch (6mm) of wax remains at the bottom of the container to prevent overheating or glass breakage.
