Sandalwood deepens the warmth, smooth and shadowed. Smoked wood lingers beneath it, carrying the faint trace of something extinguished long ago. The room smells generous, comforting—even inviting—but every jar is unlabeled, every cupboard is locked, and the chair at the table is still warm.
